High Risk Auto Insurance - How to Get a High Risk Auto Insurance Quote Even If You Can't Lower Risk

There are many reasons that insurance companies put people into the high risk auto insurance category. Lets say that you have suddenly run into a streak of bad luck and got into numerous little fender benders or just really totaled your whole car. Events like these happening over the course of a full year can really be devastating to your auto insurance monthly premiums. There are a few steps you can take to get back into the good graces of the insurance companies.

You can for example start driving less during the busiest times of the day. Most minor fender benders occur during the busy hours of the day such as between 3pm and 5 pm on the highways when most people are usually getting home from work and are stressed and tired from a full days workload and just want to get home as fast as they can, but when you stuck in rush hour its a very frustrating feeling and sometimes you just wanna nudge the car in front of you to move. You can however try to ask your employer to allow you to leave work an extra 30 minutes early each day and you will make it up to them by coming in an extra 30 minutes early. Do this for a year and see how your minor fender benders really start to disappear. This is just one little trick.

Another thing you can do is to try to move into a more rural area where there are less cars and less opportunities for getting into accidents. It may be a less glamorous and less exciting area to live in but it will certainly help you get back into the good side of the car insurance companies.

Lets say you cannot take any of these steps at this time and still want to try to get a great deal even though you know that you will only be able to get a high risk auto insurance quote. The best way to get the lowest rates possible is to try to go through a top name car insurance middle man online. These kinds of sites specialize in getting high risk drivers the best deals possible by lining up many different car insurance companies against each other so you can see which company will give you the lowest price possible for your category. Buying Annual Car Hire Insurance

Annual car hire insurance is one way you have of saving yourself significant amounts of money. The possibilities here arise from the fact that you do not necessarily have to accept the insurance offered by the car rental company.

To explain how this could work.

The rental companies offer and sell various forms of insurance to protect drivers against the costs arising from an accident. This insurance will usually cover third-party liability and damage caused to the rented vehicle (often called CDW for Collision Damage Waiver).

It is highly advisable to ensure that sufficient insurance is in place to cover these risks because the costs of an accident could be financially catastrophic without it. Unfortunately for renters, the cost of the insurance provided by the rental companies is typically several times higher than the same insurance available from specialist insurance suppliers - many of whom sell their policies on the Internet.

One form of policy offered by the specialist insurance providers is called annual car hire insurance. As the name suggests, this policy is active for a year and will cover the policyholder for any rented car driven in that period, with the exception of certain specialist cars such as sports or very high value models (check the terms and conditions for full details).

The advantage here is that because it is an annual policy, it offers economies of scale that mean significant savings for regular car renters. It could also save lots of time re-confirming insurance requirements every time a car is hired. What types and levels of cover are included in the policy can vary depending upon the policyholder's specific requirements.

The question then arises, "how can I use this privately purchased insurance?"

Car hire insurance

This will depend upon the rental conditions of the car company you're using and possibly the country you're renting in. In some countries such as the USA, the rental price may include little if any insurance. You only have to show your private cover and that should usually be the end of the story.

In other countries it may vary slightly. In some, the rental price may include say third-party liability and no CDW, although even the third-party cover may be capped at an unrealistically low payout level. Your annual insurance there could supplement the third-party limits and provide CDW.

In other cases the rental price may include what appears to be a comprehensive package of insurance including CDW. In fact, investigation may show that this package is very basic and contain numerous exclusions and excess (the amount of money you'd be expected to potentially pay towards a claims - typically between 500 and 1500 pounds). In those scenarios the direct providers may be able to offer annual car hire insurance that will cover those excess risks and also areas of the rented vehicle that may be excluded from the rental company's insurance basics.

Even where the car comes with a package of insurance included in the rental price, it may in some cases be possible to ask the rental company for a daily rental price only and show evidence that you have your own annual car hire insurance. In the final analysis, if you are renting regularly it may be worth checking out what the specialist insurance providers have to offer and cross-checking this with your car rental company. It could be the first step towards you saving yourself a lot of money each year.

Car Hire Cover and What You Need to Consider

When you are renting a car and thinking about insurance, you may find that the terms used to describe car hire cover can be confusing.

You will usually need two main types of insurance when you drive a hire car. The first known as 'third party' will cover you for claims for damage arising from injury to a third party or damage to their property or car. By law, cars rented in the UK for use in the UK must have unlimited third party liability which means that there is no upper limit on the amount that will be paid out in the event of a valid claim. If the car is being rented for use outside of the UK then it may come with limited or in some countries like the USA, no third party cover at all. So in these cases it may be advisable to buy some additional liability cover or Supplemental Liability Insurance to increase the payout limits so they correspond to the potential levels of damages awarded by courts.

The other main type of car hire cover is known as collision damage waiver and it covers damage to the rental car itself. It can also be known as loss damage waiver. Collision damage waiver generally comes with excess. Simply put, the cost of any damage to the car, up to the value of the excess, is not covered by the policy. Any such damage would need to be paid for by the renter of the vehicle. It is possible however to buy an excess insurance policy also known as Super CDW to cover any potential excess charges. Since excesses can be as much as 1500 pounds this may be a sensible approach.

When you hire a car there are a couple of ways you can arrange for your car hire cover insurance or additional 'top-up' insurance.

Often, the most expensive is to take your insurance cover from the car rental company.

Getting cheap car hire insurance

Some car hire companies quote separate daily rates for the car and the insurance. Others may quote you a combined rate for the rental of the car and the insurance.

Whether it's bought separately or included in the deal, the basic car hire cover offered by the rental company will only provide a basic level of cover and in most cases it may be in the best interest of the renter to buy additional insurance. In all likelihood the rental company themselves will offer to sell you additional insurance.

An alternative to buying car hire cover from the rental company is to use an independent insurance provider specialising in car hire cover and it is worth remembering that you are under no obligation to buy your insurance cover from the car rental company. You'll find that the premiums are significantly cheaper than those on offer from the car rental companies.

Even if your car rental agreement has insurance included you can still buy top up or excess insurance from an independent supplier.

These suppliers can offer insurance on a daily rate or as an annual policy. A useful feature of an annual policy is that it is not tied to any particular rental; you can use it throughout the 12-month period.

Provided you do not want to rent a vintage, sports or very high value car, you may find it beneficial to investigate car hire cover from the independent specialists. You may be surprised at how much you could save.

What is Car Hire Excess?

Car hire excess is one of those things relating to rental car insurance conditions that can sound complicated and frightening.

In fact, it is very easily explained. As it could make a very large difference to your financial health, it is also something that it may be worthwhile thinking about.

When a car is rented, the car hire company may include some forms of basic insurance cover in the rental price. This would typically include third-party liability (for damage and injury you may cause others) and Collision Damage Waiver (CDW) covering any damage you may do to the rented car itself.

This isn't always the case though. They may at times include very little if any insurance 'in the price' and may offer it subsequently as chargeable extras. What is or is not included in the rental price will depend upon the country you're renting in and the rental company concerned. It is usually advisable to check this thoroughly in advance and before committing to any rental.

In one sense it doesn't matter whether the rental company's insurance is included in the basic price or purchased as an extra separately because in both cases their insurance policy is very likely to contain what's called car hire excess.

The excess is an amount of money, usually between 500 and 1500 pounds, that the car rental company will expect you to pay towards the cost of an accident even if you have their basic insurance in place.

It works as follows. If you have excess on the car rental company's policy of say 1000 pounds and you have an accident that results in 1500 pounds' worth of damage, the car rental company will charge the 1000 pounds excess to your credit card and their insurance company will pay the other 500 pounds. If the damage were valued at say 750 pounds, you would have to pay it in total.

If you don't like the idea of having to pay the car hire excess, you can cover it through insurance in one of two ways.

It is usually possible to pay the rental company extra for what they may call 'top-up' insurance. This could reduce or remove altogether the excess but this form of insurance is usually several times more expensive that similar insurance purchased through the Internet from a direct specialist insurance provider.

The specialist car hire insurance providers often offer not only far cheaper car hire excess insurance but also other advantages. If you have to pay the excess following an accident, your direct policy would simply reimburse you. In addition, as the policy is sold to you on a daily or annual basis, it would also cover any vehicles rented by you during the lifetime of the policy (subject to terms and conditions). This could offer further financial advantages as well as saving time as it would no longer be necessary to have to think about and organise this sort of insurance on a rental by rental basis.

So if you are uneasy about the risks and exposures that come with the car hire excess on your car rental policy, why not investigate the direct insurance providers further? It could be well worth the effort invested.

What is Car Hire Insurance and Do You Need It?

Car hire insurance can come in one of three categories.

The first is that insurance that may come with the hire car as part of the basic rental price. It may be a fairly comprehensive bundle of insurance that covers things such as third party liability (the damage or injury you may cause to others with the rented car) and CDW (collision damage waiver or the damage you may do to the rented vehicle itself). It may cover just third party or in some cases (notably in the USA) there may not be any insurance included in the rental price at all.

The second category are those insurance components above that the car rental company will try and sell you directly as they are not included in the basic rental price.

Finally, there is the third category - that covers various forms of 'top-up' insurance that increase cover and bridge the gaps that may exist in the standard third-party and CDW insurance sold (or included in the rental price) by the car rental company.

It is generally accepted that the car hire insurance sold by car rental companies is often several times more expensive than similar insurance purchased directly from specialist insurance providers over the Internet. This is usually because they rely to some extent on rental customers not knowing that alternative sources of insurance are available and some customers in fact mistakenly believe that they are legally or commercially obliged to purchase insurance from the rental company.

Cheap cover

So, how can you save yourself very significant amounts of money on car hire insurance?

In terms of the first category, if there is insurance included in the basic rental price you may be able to ask the rental company for a daily car rental only price and inform them that you intend to provide your own insurance. They may or may not be willing to offer a revised price - this may be less likely if you are getting some form of special offer or existing discount.

For the second and third categories, where the rental company is offering insurance for sale or top-up insurance, you can directly compare these to the similar products sold by the direct insurance providers over the Internet. You may well find that not only do the direct providers sell the cheaper policies but they may also offer better cover. For example, the CDW sold by the rental companies will probably exclude from its cover several commonly damaged areas of the rented vehicle such as the windows, wheels, tyres, roof and undercarriage whereas the direct providers will probably include cover for all these areas at no extra cost.

Comprehensive protection

If you do find the car hire insurance offerings of the specialist insurance providers to be attractive, you can simply decline the insurance offered by the rental company and use your own instead. This is a way of reducing your overall car rental costs, your risks of needing to pay significant amounts towards the costs of any accident, and improving your overall insurance cover.

How Teenagers Can Cut Car Insurance Costs

Teenagers face sky high car insurance costs due to their unenviable record on the road. So what can teenagers do to reduce their car insurance premiums?

Unfortunately, teenage motorists have a poor driving record overall. Each year more than 5,000 teens die in fatal injuries caused by car crashes. Research from the Association of British Insurers finds that 18-year-olds alone are three times as likely to be involved in a car accident as someone in their 50s.

As a result teenage drivers, and particularly those in their first year of motoring, are penalised heavily by the majority of insurers. With that in mind here are some tips to keep teenage car insurance premiums in check:

Add a parent: Adding a parent to a policy can reduce a teenager's car insurance premiums due to their experience. However, they can only be added as named drivers - asking a parent to front a policy is illegal.

Advanced driving courses: Teenage motorists can take the Pass Plus course immediately after passing their driving test. This provides additional motoring experience in testing situations such as on the motorway, in major cities and at night. With some insurers, completing this course can earn a 35 per cent discount.

Increase security: Vehicles driven by teenagers are particularly prone to theft. Parking the car in a garage at night and adding security features such as alarms and immobilisers can all earn significant discounts.

Limit modifications: Don't enhance the car in your first year of driving as you may be hit with charges. Increasing the engine's power for example means you are more likely to speed in the eyes of an insurer.

Vehicle choice: Teenagers should think about their first car carefully. They should pick a vehicle that appears in a low insurance group and that has a small engine - the more conventional the choice, the better.

As several car insurance companies do not offer teenagers car insurance it's important to compare car insurance online with a comparison website to ensure you're getting the best deal for your circumstances.
